communicating with cages

When a car is on the road, they are generally focused on getting from point A to point B.  We are obviously interested in getting somewhere, but also in it for the ride itself, the throttle therapy, the scenery, in inclusion in the world around us, and the added complication of a motorcycle as opposed to a cage.  What do we need to do differently, and better?  How do we put ourselves in the mind of the car operator [who clearly doesn’t ride and may be the worst driver on the road]?

There is the obvious signal for turns and stuff, but what are the hidden sides of communication with the other vehicles?

Transmissions.  Very few people drive a manual any longer.  [excepting myself!] They have no idea what engine breaking is, or why you are suddenly slowing down with no indication.  When you use your engine to slow, just lightly tap the brakes to notify drivers of your intentions.

Lane Position.  We have huge lanes to work with, they don’t.  When we move positions in our lane to increase visibility or avoid a road hazard, it is not clear to cars that you aren’t intending to ingress into their lane.  Be clear when you do plan to change lanes and try to be obvious in your movements when not intending to do so.

Groups of riders.  Often when we are in groups we signal waaaaaaay ahead of our turns so everyone know what we are up to.  This is confusing to drivers who have no need to do this.  Be aware, think about hand signals between bikes, and blinkers between you and cars.  We are also trying to keep a large group together, and this is quite different from cars on their own.  Think about how large vehicle, like tractor-trailers communicate.  Make sure your sweep is clear with the cars what you are all intending to do.

Short Stopping.  As you know, bikes can stop much faster than cars.  Keeping this in mind, when you realize you need to short stop for a turn or a potty break, is it worth risking getting rear-ended if someone isn’t on their game, or making a loop to get back to that turn?  Clearly if your short stop is to avoid something, still do what you need to do!

Thoughts?  Feel free to leave me note if you think of something I have missed!
