I recommend everyone carries a basic set of tools and other essentials with you for basic roadside fixes. Even if you aren’t mechanically inclined, there are a few simple things you can do, I promise.
I frequently get asked what I carry to keep my bike running day to day and on long hauls. I don’t usually swap my kit, but some things aren’t necessary for day-to-day city riding.
- First Aid Kit [hopefully you’ll never need it]
- Band aides
- Burn cream
- Sunblock
- Gauze
- Pain killers
- Simple antiseptic
- Tweezers
- If you know how to use it properly, a tourniquet
- Sunblock
- 10&12mm wrench
- Allen Keys [metric for my bike]
- Screwdriver kit [the kind with several tips for various things]
- Zip-ties, a lot
- Needle nose pliers with wire snip built in
- Adjustable wrench
- Electrical tape
- Backup charger & headphones
- Tire plug kit with inflator
- Syphon tube
- Toilet paper, in a water proof baggy
This simple roll has gotten me through shredded clutch cables, lost screws [lots of ‘em on a certain brand of bikes that shall not be named], broken kickstand springs, battery terminal issues, luggage issues, flat tires, and a myriad of other -isms. Anything bigger than this is too much for roadside work. If you need a lift to do the job, you don’t need the tools on the road.
*Note: tools rolls usually aren’t locked, so don’t put your favorite wrench set int here, put something cheap from Harbor Freight or whatever. then if it disappears you won’t be heartbroken.
