cheap

tl;dr – get loyalty cards/apps and only buy what you NEED

OK, those that know me IRL know that I am frugal. I hate waste. Wasted food, wasted money, and wasted time. (time is a whole other post…) So, how do you travel on the cheap without being unsafe you having a shit time? Below is a list of things i generally do:

  • Buy things you need, nothing more. I have a tendency to get excited and go shopping to get supplies before a trip and end up buying silly crap. When you are getting yourself prepared ask yourself what you need and what is frivolous. Do you really need a 3rd tire pump? Do you NEED new boots? On the road, do you need imported water, or just wet?
  • Get loyalty cards for places you go a lot. On the road you’re probably going to get a bunch of takeout and stop at a bunch of gas stations. Outside of New England travel stops not run by the highway authority are really common, like Love’s and TA. Most of them have loyalty programs for truckers, but they apply to biker’s just the same. So, grab the app and save a few. The same goes for food. If you are like me you like quick healthy stops, so get a Subway card and get free sammiches. Also, if you aren’t picky [I am so this doesn’t often work for me] go with the deal of the day, most places have them.
  • Camping is always cheaper than hotels, and can often be free. There are several sites that offer free camping look-ups or even free squatter locations, depending how adventurous you’re feeling. If you prefer to stay in a hotel last minute bookings are usually the cheapest. Also ask yourself what you really need. If you are on a road trip who cares if they have a gym. And consider motels versus hotels, they are all private entrance instead of a lobby, and are often ignored and thus cheaper. Hotels, motels, and chain campgrounds also have loyalty programs that can save you cash if you stick with the same one.
  • National Parks. They are beautiful. If they are something you plan to visit, look into the annual pass. it is $80 and gets 2 bikes into any park.
